The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the most difficult places in the world to be a woman.  Poverty is extreme, violence is endemic, and the few economic opportunities that exist are largely inaccessible to women.  Rebuild Women’s Hope (RWH) was born out of the desire to unite a group of coffee producing women who are fighting against inequality in women’s rights and re-establishing the value of a woman’s work. RWH works to created a spirit of entrepreneurship and self-management in women in order to raise the standard of living in their communities and across their nation.

Marcelline Budza created RWH in 2013 along the shores of Idjwi, a large remote island in the middle of Lake Kivu in eastern Congo.  When RWH was founded, coffee on Idjwi had no export market, and was sold and smuggled into neighboring countries for resale. Today, RWH has expanded to over 3000 members and provides training, interest free loans, and facilities that enable farmers to produce coffee of the highest quality. Marcelline has won several awards for her work with RWH including the Robert Burns Humanitarian Award (2017), the French Republic Human Rights Prize (2019), and the University of Oslo Human Rights Award (2020).

This washed coffee is expertly roasted to highlight the layered flavors of dates, red grape and brown sugar in the beans.

Our Roaster suggests brewing this coffee in a V60. Preheat everything, wet the filter, and bring water to 205F.  Dose 22 grams of coffee and zero the scale.  Coffee should be ground to a medium grind size. First pour: two times the weight of the dose and let coffee bloom for 1 minute. Second pour: pour up to 200 grams by 1 minute 20 seconds. Phase pours: pour 50 grams every 10 seconds until 350 grams.  Total brew time should be 3-4 minutes.
